Home sweet home.

Desert scene.

Ammunition canisters or 50-gallon drums at four corners
were all that was needed to delineate an airfield. They
held presents for “Jerry”.

Sundown in the western desert.

Coming in for a landing.

Bailing out.

An RAF kitchen.

Parlor, bedroom, sink and bath. Although
there were no frills, the desert was a remarkably healthy
place. In locations where we stayed put for a while,
camp sanitation was as shown, using ammunition canisters
(shown here) or sometimes 50-gallon gasoline drums cut
in half. Sometimes urinals were made using two British
square 5-gallon gasoline tins with both ends cut out
and one placed at an angle partially inside the other.
This arrangement was called a “Desert Lilly”.
